NEED STORAGE SPACE?

The art of decluttering

Decluttering can be a daunting task, but it’s an important step towards creating a more peaceful and happy home. It’s a powerful tool for creating space in your life, both physically and mentally.

Identify

The first step in the art of decluttering is to identify what you truly value. Decluttering is not just about getting rid of things, but about creating space for the things that truly matter. Clutter can weigh us down and make it difficult to focus on what’s important. What is it that brings you joy and happiness? This could be anything from spending time with loved ones to pursuing a creative hobby or traveling the world. Once you have a clear idea of what matters most to you, it becomes easier to evaluate your possessions and decide what to keep and what to let go of.

Let go

One of the biggest obstacles to decluttering is attachment. We tend to hold onto things because of sentimental value, perceived usefulness, or even just because we’ve owned them for a long time. But the truth is, holding onto things that no longer serve us may actually hold us back from living the life we want.

Start small

A cornerstone to successful decluttering is to start small. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff we accumulate over time. By starting with a small area, such as a single drawer or shelf, we can build momentum and gain confidence in our ability to let go.

To overcome this attachment, I recommend using the “one in, one out” rule. Whenever you bring something new into your life, whether it’s a piece of clothing or a gadget, get rid of something else in return. This helps to keep your possessions in check and ensures that you only keep the things that truly add value to your life. We should be mindful of what we bring into our homes. By being more intentional about our purchases, we can avoid adding unnecessary clutter to our lives in the first place. Before making a purchase, ask yourself if the item will truly add value to your life or if it’s just another thing to dust and store.

Another strategy for decluttering is to focus on the big wins. Instead of getting bogged down in the minutiae of decluttering, start by tackling the items that will have the biggest impact on your life. This could be as simple as clearing out your closet to make getting dressed in the morning easier. Alternatively it can be as significant as downsizing your home to free up more time and money for the things you truly value. Another motivator for decluttering may be to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that a tidy and organized space can promote feelings of calm and well-being.

Storage?

While decluttering is a fantastic way to create space and simplify your life, sometimes there are items that we simply can’t let go of. This may be because they hold sentimental value or because they are seasonal items that we only use occasionally. In these cases, having a storage solution can be incredibly helpful. Storage allows you to keep these items out of sight and out of mind, freeing up space in your home and reducing visual clutter. It also provides a level of organization and protection for your possessions, ensuring that they are kept safe and in good condition until you need them again. A storage solution can simplify life and declutter spaces, such as closet, loft or shelving in a garage. One great way to declutter while also doing some good is to donate children’s books to a good cause. Donating children’s books to a good cause can be a rewarding way to declutter and give back. There are many organizations that accept donations of children’s books and distribute them to those in need, such as schools, libraries, and community centres. One such organization that I recommend is The Children’s Book Project. They are a UK-based charity that provides books to children who need them most, with a mission to promote literacy and a love of reading.

By donating your gently used children’s books to The Children’s Book Project, you can help provide access to books for children who may not have the same opportunities as others. Not only does this help promote literacy and learning, but it can also foster a sense of community and connection. You can learn more about their mission and how to donate on their website: https://childrensbookproject.co.uk/

Incorporating acts of service and giving back into our decluttering can add an extra layer of meaning and purpose to the process. By donating to organizations like The Children’s Book Project, we can help make a positive impact in the world while also simplifying our own lives.

The Children’s Book Project gifts 1,000s of pre-loved books to schools and communities, to enable them to put on gifting events where children select and take home books that they feel excited about. They believe in giving every child the opportunity to own their own book and empowering children to choose a book they are motivated to read. This year the Children’s Book Project celebrates gifting its millionth book.

To date they have been primarily focussed in London but this year they are looking to expand the reach of their work to Birmingham, where they are now launching a dedicated hub.
