NEED STORAGE SPACE?

History of self-access storage

The history of self-access storage is more than simply a story of rooms and boxes; it’s also a reflection of how our demands as a society are changing, how technology is advancing, and how much personal privacy and security are valued.

The Ancient World and Storage

In ancient civilizations, such as the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia, large community storage pits were excavated to preserve grains. These pits were sealed with clay lids to protect against pests and moisture, ensuring the community’s sustenance. Such communal solutions were prevalent, but as societies grew, so did individual storage needs. In ancient China, intricately designed wooden chests were used to store documents, clothing, and valuables, highlighting the blend of utility and artistry in storage solutions.

Medieval Trade and Storage

The medieval era, marked by the flourishing of trade routes, introduced innovative storage systems. Merchants needed secure yet accessible places to store their wares, leading to the development of lockers at trade hubs. These lockers, forerunners to modern safety deposit boxes, were guarded and offered merchants the peace of mind to continue their journeys without the burden of their entire inventory.

Victorian Era: Ornamentation and Utility

The Victorian era witnessed an interesting dichotomy. On one side, the industrial revolution was rapidly urbanizing societies, reducing personal space. On the other, the Victorians had a penchant for ornamentation and collectibles. Storage trunks became more ornate, often doubling as decorative pieces. Cabinets with multiple drawers, wardrobes with sections of varied sizes, and dedicated spaces for specific items, like hat boxes, became popular.

Post-War Era: The Real Boom

Post World War II, with the suburbanization of America and many parts of Europe, families accumulated more possessions. However, with frequent relocations for work, there arose a need for temporary storage solutions. This era marks the real boom of the modern self-storage industry. Facilities began popping up on the outskirts of cities, offering varying sizes of storage units, from closets to garages.

Modern Innovations in Storage

Today, the self-storage industry is a multi-billion-dollar sector, with innovations driven by customer needs. For instance, with the rise of e-commerce, many self-storage units now offer package reception services. There’s also an increasing trend of ‘valet storage’, where companies pick up, store, and return items on demand.

Additionally, with the global push for sustainability, green storage solutions are emerging. These facilities focus on eco-friendly construction, solar power, and efficient insulation methods. Digital innovations, such as virtual reality storage space estimators, allow customers to gauge the size of the unit they need without even visiting a facility.

The Future of Self-Access Storage

As urban spaces get more cramped, and as our lifestyles continue to change, self-access storage solutions will inevitably evolve. We may see more underground storage facilities, leveraging the natural insulation of the earth. However, perhaps, multi-story storage buildings with robotic retrieval systems, ensuring maximum space utilization.

What remains consistent through the ages is our inherent need for space – a space that’s both private and accessible. The history of self-access storage tells that tale, one of innovation, adaptation, and the ceaseless quest for a place to call our own.

Over the past 50+ years our own storage facilities have undergone changes, from moving to a more suitable location, situated close to Birmingham and Solihull, to the addition of adding wooden container storage, modernising our storage, vehicles and moving equipment.
